The Indian State of Karnataka has joined the growing list of states that have banned firecrackers amid the coronavirus pandemic just days before Diwali. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said they decided to ban firecrackers in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We discussed this and are taking the decision to ban fireworks this Deepavali. It has been discussed and an order is being issued. This is because of COVID-19,” Mr Yediyurappa told reporters today.
Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar had said on Thursday firecrackers can hurt people who are infected with coronavirus, and asked residents to avoid bursting them this Diwali. He also held a meeting with the state’s COVID-19 expert committee and technical advisory committee deliberating on the pros and cons of banning firecrackers during Diwali
