Punjab to Erect Memorial For Deceased Farmers During Farm Laws Agitation

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that the three farm laws would be repealed, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi announced on Friday that a memorial would be built in the state in honour of all the farmers who died during the farmers’ agitation.

“In the name of farmers’ agitation, a memorial will be built in the state,” Channi said on Friday. “If there was any major struggle after independence, it was this (farmers’ agitation against three farm laws) that strengthened the country’s democratic system,” he added. In an official statement, the Chief Minister blamed the Centre for “thrusting” the farm laws on farmers, saying, “The BJP-led Central government should admit on record to having made a Himalayan blunder in bringing these bills for which it has hardly bothered to even relent for the past one and half years.”

He also demanded that the state be compensated for financial and property losses incurred during the Kisan Morcha. He also stated that the state government has already provided government jobs to the families of farmers who have lost their lives in the farm agitation, as well as financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to each family of the deceased farmer. CM Channi also requested that the Prime Minister announce a financial package to help farmers and labourers who are drowning in debt. He also asked the government to make its position on the Minimum Support Price and public procurement of farmers’ crops “crystal clear.”
