Overnight encounter: Security forces shot and killed LeT terrorist in Srinagar

Officials said that in an overnight encounter, a terrorist was gunned down by joint security forces of the Indian armed forces and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police in the Harwan area of Srinagar on Sunday. The slain terrorist has been identified as Saifulla alias Abu Khalid, a resident of Pakistan’s Karachi and a member of the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba, according to the J&K Police (LeT).

According to Vijay Kumar, the Inspector-General of Kashmir Police (IGP), the terrorist entered India in 2016 and has been active in the Harwan area for the past three years. According to the official, he was also involved in a number of terrorism-related crimes.

Within the last 33 days, three Pakistani terrorists have been killed within Srinagar city limits, according to the J&K Police. “They were involved in a number of terror crimes, including attacks on police and security forces, as well as civilian killings,” said IGP Kashmir. “It demonstrates that Pakistan is hell-bent on upsetting the peace in Kashmir, particularly in Srinagar.”

A terrorist was killed earlier this week in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, in a similar encounter with security forces. A Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist was also killed in the same area last week.

However, the Union home ministry told the Lok Sabha during the current winter session that terror-related incidents in Union territory have decreased from 255 in 2019 to 206 this year since the special status under Article 370 of the Constitution was abolished.

“Security in Jammu and Kashmir has improved significantly since August 2019, and terrorist incidents have decreased significantly,” said Nityanand Rai, minister of state for home affairs. “The security grid has been reinforced, and terrorist infiltration from across the border has decreased significantly.”
