West Bengal: 18 people killed in road accident in Nadia

According to police, a road accident occurred late Saturday night in West Bengal‘s Phulbari area of Nadia district, killing at least 18 people and injuring five others.

People in a matador car were on their way to the Nabadeep crematorium on Saturday night, according to officials from the Hanskhali police station, to cremate a body from Bagda in North 24 Parganas.

At Phulbari area of Hanskhali police station area of Nadia, the matador was hit by a lorry loaded with stones that was parked on the side of the road and suddenly started. At least 18 people were killed instantly.

The injured of the road accident have been taken to the district hospital in Shaktinagar. The dense fog and the high speed of the vehicle, according to locals, were to blame for the accident. More investigations are carried out.

“Deeply pained at reported death of 18 people and five others injured in Nadia District after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck parked on the side of road. Expect all efforts @MamataOfficial to the family of deceased and injured. Need to promote Road Safety,” Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said on social media.

The West Bengal Government had launched a “Save Drive, Safe Drive” campaign for promoting road safety in the State in 2016.
