Terrorists threw a grenade at Hari Singh High Street on the eve of Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday afternoon, injuring four people, including a police officer, officials said.

The grenade was thrown at the vehicle of the security forces. It, however, missed its intended target and exploded on the road, injuring three civilians, two of whom were women, as well as a security force member. The attack also injured one police inspector, Tanveer Hussain of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and his wife.

Police claimed to have apprehended the perpetrator of the grenade attack late Tuesday night. “The grenade thrower who was involved in today’s #terror incident at Hari Singh High Street #Srinagar, in which a few civilians and one police officer were injured, has been arrested by Srinagar Police.” Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar tweeted, “#Investigation is ongoing.” The arrestee’s identity was kept a secret by the IGP.

According to a police spokesperson, the incident occurred at 3.25 p.m., when unknown terrorists threw a grenade at a police vehicle near Srinagar’s Hari Singh High Street.

Senior police officers arrived on the scene right away, and the area was cordoned off, according to the spokesperson.

To apprehend the attackers, a search and cordon operation was launched in nearby markets.

The three injured civilians were stable, according to the medical superintendent at SMHS hospital. “The injuries sustained by the civilians treated in the hospital were minor.”

The grenade attack happened a day before the city’s SK Stadium hosted the Republic Day parade. The forces are on high alert, according to the spokesperson.
