The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that New Delhi’s immediate priority is to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for terrorist activities directed against the country, two days after India’s envoy to Qatar met with a top Taliban leader in Doha.
According to MEA official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, India used the Doha meeting to express its concern and discuss the return of Indians who remain in Afghanistan.
“We got a positive response,” Bagchi said of the meeting between India’s Ambassador to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the head of the Taliban’s political office in Doha.
On Tuesday, hours after the last US military aircraft flew out of Kabul, signalling the end of the 20-year war, New Delhi made its first official contact with the Taliban.
