The state of Karnataka will send a team to Maharashtra to study the wine-selling model there. K Gopalaiah, Karnataka’s excise minister, said on Sunday that his government will decide on the model’s implementation based on the committees’ reports.
Last Tuesday, Maharashtra approved the sale of wine in supermarkets and walk-in stores for a fee of $5,000 per year. The decision, according to the state cabinet, is intended to provide Indian wineries with a more accessible marketing channel.
“It is a newly introduced product,” Gopalaiah told news agency ANI. We’ll appoint a committee to investigate it, and we’ll make a decision based on their findings.”
“We will have to see if it helps the government and also that it does not affect businesses,” he said, emphasising that the Karnataka government does not have to adopt the same model just because Maharashtra has.
Karunakar Hegde, vice president of the Federation of Wine Merchants of Karnataka, told ANI that the state’s grape wine production is not as high as Maharashtra’s. “Maharashtra has a larger number of wine producers. In Karnataka, only about 5% of wine traders are permitted. There are only a few wineries in this area “he stated
Hegde, on the other hand, believes that converting the swine industry to an open market will be detrimental, as there will be no control.
The Maharashtra government’s decision sparked a verbal spat between the state’s ruling Shiv Sena-led three-party alliance and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP has linked the decision to the business of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. Raut’s family members entered into a partnership with a company called Magpie DFS private limited, which was involved in wine distribution last year, according to BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
Raut responded by saying that if someone is in a legitimate business, there is nothing wrong with it, and that BJP leaders will have to go underground if he starts revealing their businesses.
Former chief minister and opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis said on Thursday that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is turning Maharashtra into a “Madya Rashtra,” or “Liquor Nation.” The Maharashtra Congress, which is part of the ruling coalition, responded by claiming that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh had made a similar decision that applied to all types of liquor, not just wine made from grapes, mead, fruits, and flowers.
