The C-17 heavy-lift aircraft of the Indian Air Force landed at Jamnagar, Gujarat, bringing the second group of diplomats, officials, and media from Kabul. With the assistance of US soldiers manning the ATC, the IAF aircraft took off from Hamid Karzai International (HKI) Airport about 8 a.m. Kabul time. Rudrendra Tandon, India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, is among the 120 diplomats and officials on board.
The evacuation follows a 24-hour negotiating period.
Around 1 p.m., the IAF aircraft is likely to arrive in Delhi. India is now waiting for US forces to allow civilian planes to Kabul so that more people may be rescued. The first group of Indians arrived on an aircraft operated by Air India on Sunday.
