After 13 students tested positive for COVID-19, authorities in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir, ordered the closure of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University until further orders, officials said on Sunday.
According to an order issued by Reasi District Magistrate Charandeep Singh, the decision to close the university located at Kakriyal near Katra town, the base camp for pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine, was made to contain the spread and ensure the safety of students and the general public.
According to the order, COVID-19 screening was conducted at the university on December 31, 2021, and January 1, 2022, during which 13 students tested positive.
“Any violation of the order shall invite punitive action under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 and the Disaster Management Act, 2005,” Singh, who is also the chairman of the district disaster management authority, said, ordering the university’s immediate closure until further orders.
On Saturday, 169 new coronavirus cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, bringing the total number of infections to 3,41,459, with two more fatalities bringing the total number of deaths to 4,530.
