India defeats New Zealand by 372 runs in largest Test victory in history

India defeats

India defeats New Zealand by 372 runs and won the series 1-0 on the fourth day of the second and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium.

The 337-run win over South Africa at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi in 2015 was India’s largest by runs margin in Tests.

The five remaining wickets were taken by India in less than 45 minutes, bringing the Test to a close.

India’s victory margin is the highest it has ever been on home soil. It was also Rahul Dravid’s first win as a coach in a Test match.

The extra bounce and turn presented familiar problems for the Kiwis, who had fought tooth and nail in Kanpur, in a match they will try to remember for Ajaz Patel’s 10-wicket heroics. Patel bowled 73.5 overs in two innings for New Zealand, and his team batted 84.4 overs in total, which would indicate abject capitulation.

New Zealand were all out for 167 in the first session, chasing 540 for victory, with India’s Ravichandran Ashwin taking 4-34 and his spin bowling colleague Jayant Yadav taking 4-49. Ravichandran Ashwin also took his 300th wicket on Indian soil to bring the match to a close quickly.

Jayant Yadav, who had struggled on the third evening, rediscovered his mojo with a career-best spell of 14-4-49-4, despite not having played a Test match since 2017. It was Yadav’s first five-wicket haul in a Test, and given that he has had a difficult time in first-class cricket due to injuries and poor form, head coach Rahul Dravid’s faith in his abilities paid off handsomely.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s match figures of 8-42 are also the second-best for a bowler to finish a Test match without a five-wicket haul. Shane Warne, the legendary leg-spinner, bowled 8-24 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 2002.

The first Test in Kanpur was a stalemate.

This is the second time Team India, led by Virat Kohli, has defeated the Black Caps by such a large margin. In 2016, India defeated New Zealand by 321 runs in the third and final Test at Indore’s Holkar Stadium to complete a 3-0 series sweep.
