Anshul Gupta, general manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said the railways were working very hard to bring train services to the State Capital as soon as possible.
On Day 2 of the Hornbill Festival in Kisama on Thursday, he said that once trains start running from Kohima, tourist footfalls will increase, giving a huge boost to the state’s tourism sector.
He predicted that economic activity would pick up as a result of the influx of tourists, who would create job opportunities.
Gupta stated that the railway line would not only lead to the development of health infrastructure, but that Indian Railways would also invest in other facilities, as there would be eight rail stations.
Gupta claimed that the NFR had asked the State government for help in making each station’s architecture reflect the rich culture and heritage of a specific tribe, and that the railways were cooperating closely with the State government on this.
Railways are working on two more projects, according to the general manager: developing Dimapur railway station and making Kohima a world-class station.
The Dimapur-Kohima new line project, with a revised length of 82.5 kilometres, was approved in 2007-2008.
It was designated as a national project in May 2017 and spans 2.75 kilometres in Assam and 79.75 kilometres in Nagaland, passing through East Karbi Anglong, Dimapur, and Kohima.
Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Mrengujuma, and Zubza will be the stations. The 82.5-kilometer line will run from Dhansiri near Dimapur to Zubza near Kohima. For ease of commissioning, the project has been divided into three phases.
Phase I, the 16.5-kilometer Dhansiri-Sukhovi section, was inspected by a commissioner of railway safety on October 23 and received approval, while Phase II, the 28-kilometer Sukhovi-Pherima section, is expected to be completed in July 2023, and Phase III, the 38-kilometer Pherima-Zubza section, is expected to be completed in March 2026.
Tunnels covering 29.02 kilometres, two important bridges, 22 major bridges, eight stations, four road overbridges, 32 road under-bridges, and limited-height subways will all be part of the project.
