Tata Altroz CNG Mileage Test – Real World City, Highway and Combined Efficiency

Tata Motors introduced the Altroz CNG in 2023 as part of its push toward more fuel-efficient and sustainable mobility options. Now carried forward unchanged in its updated facelifted version, the Altroz CNG continues to be offered with the same engine and transmission configuration.

While Tata has not disclosed ARAI mileage for the facelift, we now have tested real-world mileage data to better understand its actual performance.

Mileage

In our mileage test, the Tata Altroz CNG recorded figures that provide a clear insight into its efficiency potential. In typical city conditions, the car returned a mileage of 19.80 km/kg. On the highway, it delivered a much stronger figure of 34.58 km/kg. This results in a combined average mileage of 27.19 km/kg, which exceeds the previously claimed figure of 26.2 km/kg for the earlier version.

Engine

The Altroz CNG is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is the same unit available in the petrol variants. However, when operated in CNG mode, the engine’s output is reduced to 72 bhp and 103 Nm of torque.

The car is offered exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission. There is no automatic variant available. The power delivery in CNG mode is relatively modest, but sufficient for typical city commuting and steady highway cruising.

Performance

Performance in the CNG mode is tuned more for efficiency than for driving dynamics. While acceleration is adequate for everyday driving, overtaking at higher speeds or driving on inclines requires planned inputs. That said, the refinement level remains acceptable for the segment.

A notable feature is Tata’s dual-cylinder CNG tank setup, placed beneath the boot floor. This approach helps retain most of the luggage space, unlike traditional CNG kits that consume a large portion of the boot.
