Assam: BTC Election to be held in Two Phases in December

The Assam State Election Commission on Tuesday Scheduled the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) polls in two phases on December 7 and 10. Altogether 72 candidates are in the fray for the elections to the council, which is currently being administered under the supervision of Governor Jagadish Mukhi after its term ended on April 27.

The first phase of the polling, will cover the BTC Constituencies falling Udalguri and Baksa districts while the Second phase will cover two constituencies under Chirang and Kokrajhar districts, State election commission Alok Kumar informed. 

“The counting of votes for both phases of the polls will start from 8 am on December 12, 2020, till its completion,” State Election Commissioner, Alok Kumar, stated in a notification issued on Tuesday.

Earlier, the Gauhati High Court had directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to release an election notification regarding the BTC elections and declare the election date by November 20, 2020. The Court gave the order after hearing a PIL filed on BTC elections. The filing of nominations and scrutiny of the documents were already completed by March 20.
