Assam: IIT-G researchers to develop support system for oil and gas

IIT-G researchers to develop support system for oil and gas

Officials from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) announced on Friday that a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) developed a novel decision support system for oil and gas drilling as part of a collaborative research and development project.

The newly developed system, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as hybrid model-based diagnostics and data analytics algorithms, will drastically reduce non-productive time in oil and gas exploration and drilling projects.

Meanwhile, Senthilmuruan Subbiah, a professor in the institute’s Chemical Engineering department, led a team of researchers who demonstrated a real-time well drilling monitoring and decision support system tool.

Moreover, this will make use of existing data to enable real-time multi-objective drilling parameter optimization, with operators selecting the most feasible and optimal solution in real-time.

The team has filed an Indian patent application to protect the innovations’ novelty and utility.

Further, Officials said the ONGC’s IIT-G and Institute of Drilling Technology signed a technology license agreement with Softdrill Solutions Private Ltd. of Udaipur (Rajasthan) on Friday to develop an advanced real-time operational solution for oil and gas well drilling operations.

According to Krishnamoorthy, Dean Industrial Interaction and Special Initiatives, the IIT-G has the necessary expertise in various domains in various departments and centres to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry.

In addition, he said,  “IIT-G is also involved in indigenous technology development, not only for drilling but for other areas as well,”.

Vimal Katiyar, Dean, Research and Development (R&D), emphasised that IIT-G has been a Center of Excellence in R&D for the oil and gas industry, with ONGC, Oil India Limited, and other Indian oil companies funding many projects.

However, IIT-G has been ranked 41st in the world for research in the petroleum industry by QS Ranking, he said, owing to its research leadership.
