Assam: Elephant Man of Asia Dr KK Sarma Receives Padma Shri Award

Assam’s veterinarian Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma has been conferred Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution in the field of wildlife treatment and Asian Elephant conservation by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Dr Sarma is widely recognised as the “Elephant Man of Asia”, and is known for his work in the field of wildlife healthcare, management and conservation.

Dr Sarma is the professor and head of the Department of Surgery and Radiology of the College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara in Guwahati. During the last three decades, Dr Sarma played an outstanding contribution in wildlife treatment across India, and even abroad.

The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian honours of India announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. The Awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). 

The award seeks to recognise achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.

119 Padma Awards were presented by the President this year. The list comprises seven Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards. 29 of the awardees are women, 16 will be conferred with the honour posthumously and one is a transgender awardee.
