Manipur: CM Biren Singh to serve as caretaker Chief Minister

CM Biren Singh to serve as caretaker Chief Minister

A day after the BJP swept back to power in Manipur for the second time in a row, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh met with Governor La Ganesan on Friday and resigned, while the Governor asked him to serve in office until the new government took over.

“Called on Hon’ble Governor of Manipur at the Raj Bhavan to tender my resignation from the post of Chief Minister today. I will now serve as the caretaker Chief Minister,” tweeted Singh.

According to a Raj Bhavan official, the Chief Minister met with the Governor and submitted his resignation letter, accompanied by other ministers and MLAs.

Moreover, responding to the Prime Minister’s, many central ministers’, and leaders’ congratulatory messages, Singh tweeted: “The entire party karyakarta is thankful to our Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji for his guidance and relentless efforts in bringing peace and development in the state. With this decisive win, we are marching ahead to achieve greater heights under your able leadership.”

Further, the BJP central leadership will likely make a decision on leadership within the next day or two. Before the two-phase elections (on February 28 and March 5), the BJP informally declared Singh as the party’s chief ministerial face and the next government’s leader.

However, after Assam, the BJP retained power in Manipur for the second consecutive term by winning 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, securing an absolute majority on its own.

For the fifth time in a row, the 61-year-old Congress-turned-BJP leader retained his stronghold Heingang Assembly constituency.

He defeated his opponent, Congress candidate Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh, by 18,271 votes.
