Storm Eunice wreaks havoc across Europe

At least 16 people have died as Storm Eunice wreaked havoc across Europe.

As a result of the fierce winds that felled trees and sent debris flying, people died in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, the Irish Republic, and the United Kingdom.

Across Europe, millions of homes and businesses lost power, and transportation networks were disrupted.

The Dutch coastguard said it was looking for 26 empty shipping containers that had been lost in the North Sea.

Moreover, on Friday, gusts of more than 120 mph (nearly 200 km/h) were recorded.

Four people were killed in the Netherlands as a result of falling trees, and four more were killed in Poland.

Three people were killed on England roads, two more in Germany, and two in Belgium, including a man who was hit in the head by a solar panel blown off a building in Ghent.

A council worker in his 60s was killed when he was hit by a tree in County Wexford, Republic of Ireland.

A total of 30 people were injured in storm-related road accidents in northern France.

The 40ft (12m) shipping containers were lost while the Panama-registered Marcos V was en route to Germany.

The Dutch coastguard said helicopters and an emergency towing vessel were being used in the search, and ships in the area were also asked to keep an eye out.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, parts of the roof of ADO Den Haag’s stadium in the Hague were ripped off, and high-speed trains to Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom were cancelled.

In Germany, the Deutsche Bahn rail operator reported that “more than 1,000km” (620 miles) of track had been damaged.

According to AFP, Poland still had one million customers without power on Saturday afternoon, after the country’s northwest took a beating.

Ferries across the Channel, the world’s busiest shipping lane, were suspended until Friday afternoon when the English port of Dover reopened. At airports such as Heathrow and Schiphol, hundreds of flights were cancelled.
