According to a major report set to be released Tuesday, tens of thousands of people, if not more, are believed to have been victims of child sex abuse within France’s Catholic Church over the past seven decades.

The 2,500-page report, compiled by an independent commission, comes as the Catholic Church in France, like in other countries, tries to come to terms with long-hidden scandals.

According to the French press, the commission’s president, Jean-Marc Sauve, an estimated 3,000 child abusers — two-thirds of whom were priests — have worked in the church over the last 70 years.
