An almost 63-year-old library book has finally been returned. It was sent to Newcastle’s central library, but on November 25, 1958, it was supposed to be returned to Fenham Library.
“Better late than never!!” read a letter attached to the first edition copy of Darrell Huff’s How to Lie with Statistics. The returner’s name is unknown, but library manager David Hepworth speculates that “they may have been concerned about us sending them a charge.”
To prevent individuals from making needless travels, fines for late books have been suspended during the epidemic. Staff at the library determined that the fee would have been around £3,434, based on the current rate of 15p per day, despite the fact that all fines are limited at £15.
