Amtrak train derailed in United States; 3 deaths & injuries reported

An Amtrak train running between Seattle and Chicago derailed in north-central Montana on Saturday afternoon, killing at least three people, according to a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office official.

Three people died in the derailment, according to dispatcher Starr Tyler. She didn’t have any more information. Multiple injuries were reported by Amtrak in a statement.

According to Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams, the Empire Builder train derailed near Joplin, a town of about 200 people, at 4 p.m. The accident occurred approximately 150 miles (241 kilometres) north of Helena and 30 miles (48 kilometres) from the Canadian border.
