Covid Curbs: India’s medical regulator cautions against enrolling in Chinese universities

India’s top medical education regulator warned students against enrolling in Chinese universities on Tuesday, as the country continues to ban foreign students due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The National Medical Commission (NMC) issued the warning after receiving information from India’s external affairs ministry that some Chinese medical universities were accepting applications for admission to MBBS programmes for the current and upcoming academic years, despite China’s ban on foreign students.

Students who enrol in these Chinese universities this academic year will almost certainly have to take classes online in the near future, and only online medical degrees are not recognised in India, according to the NMC.

Thousands of Indian medical students studying in China are stranded in India for more than two years due to travel restrictions, putting their careers in jeopardy, according to the NMC notice.

“Any prospective student should be aware that the Government of the People’s Republic of China has imposed strict travel restrictions in the aftermath of Covid-19 and suspended all visas since November 2020,” the NMC said in response to admission notices from Chinese universities.

“A large number of international students including Indian students have not been able to return to China to continue their studies due to these restrictions. Thus far, there has been no relaxation in the restrictions,” the notice added.
