Pakistan planning to refloat ship that sank near Karachi

Pakistani officials said Monday they were working on measures to refloat a cargo ship that went aground last week off the shore near Karachi, Pakistan’s southern port city, due to severe weather.

Authorities claimed the Heng Tong 77 was en route to Istanbul from China when it strayed and became trapped in shallow seas near the Pakistani coast on Wednesday. The incident sparked worries that the oil being transported in the vessel may spill, causing environmental damage.

The Karachi Port Trust, which oversees naval activity at the port in Pakistan, has offered no information on how the ship would be refloated. According to local media reports, Pakistani officials are assisting the ship’s owner in importing specific equipment to refloat the vessel.
