Twitter suspends 300 accounts promoting Philippines’ Marcos

Twitter Inc. banned more than 300 accounts for allegedly endorsing Philippines presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., alleging a breach of its platform manipulation and spam standards.

According to the corporation, the bulk of these social media accounts had already been removed as part of normal operations prior to news outlet Rappler’s storey on pro-Marcos Twitter handles.
The inquiry is still underway, according to the statement.

“With the Philippine elections taking place this May, we remain vigilant about identifying and eliminating suspected information campaigns targeting election conversations,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Marcos, who led the presidential choice poll last month, has a strong internet following. Last year, independent fact-checker VERA Files found he profited the most from election-related misinformation.

“While it is true that there could have been hundreds of Twitter accounts that were suspended, there is no certainty that all of them belong to the supporters of Bongbong Marcos,” his spokesman Vic Rodriguez said in a statement.
