AAPSU Demands Postponement of Local Body Elections in Arunachal

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Tuesday demanded the postponement of the Panchayat and Municipal Elections, which are scheduled to be held on December 22.

Addressing a press conference in Itanagar, AAPSU President Hawa Bagang expressed his disappointment over State Election Commission’s decision to hold the local body elections. “The Health Department had recommended that local body elections should be postponed in view of the prevailing COVID-19 Pandemic but the SEC announced elections. COVID-19 Vaccine might be available in January or February. The election commission can conduct the Polls in April,” he said.

The AAPSU President also informed that the Union submitted a representation of the State Election Commissioner in this regard, urging the commission to reply in a few days. In the representation, the AAPSU has demanded for a postponement of the local body elections.

It may be mentioned that Congress, People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) and Janata Dal (Secular) threatened to boycott the elections if the poll panel doesn’t consider their request to conduct the polls in the month of April and May, 2021 before the monsoon season.
