Arunachal: Home Minister Felix discusses anti-drugs policy with new DGP

Felix

On Saturday, Home Minister Bamang Felix and the state’s newly appointed Director-General of Police (DGP), Satish Golcha, discussed the Arunachal Pradesh Psychoactive Substances Policy 2021.

The policy, which was implemented by the state under the patronage of Chief Minister Pema Khandu to combat the drug menace, was discussed when the DGP paid Felix a visit at his office here. It was the two’s first official meeting since Golcha took over as the state’s DGP.

The minister emphasised three main approaches to combating the drug problem: supply reduction, demand reduction, and harm reduction.

On the supply reduction front, an emphasis was placed on the NDPS Act’s enforcement and strict action against drug dealers and their networks, as well as working on alternative livelihoods for those involved in illicit cultivation through crop substitution by promoting other crops and horticulture.

Felix also emphasised the importance of detecting early signs of addiction in adolescents and youths, counselling parents and communities supported by ongoing IEC activities, and providing alternative activities for youths in sports, art, and culture.

In terms of harm reduction, the minister stated that treatment and rehabilitation, as well as the implementation of opioid substitution therapy in district hospital outpatient departments, should be prioritised.

Several other issues concerning security, state policing challenges, and police welfare were also discussed.
