The Graffiti Artist from Assam, Nilim Nayan Mahanta, who was among the two persons arrested for allegedly defacing an artwork on the boundary wall of the civil secretariat in Itanagar capital region on 27th March was seen repainting the state’s wall of harmony, as per Yupia Judicial Magistrate’s order on 29th March.

The duo, Nilim Mahanta and advocate Ebo Mili were released on a bail bond of Rs 3,000 each and on the condition that Mahanta will repaint the portion of the wall and bring it back to its earlier form.

Judge Tenzin Metho in her order stated that it is “constitutionally accepted principle that the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression comes with certain reasonable restrictions. And even if both the accused wanted to convey their protest regarding the issue of construction of dams, there are several other modes of conveying their message, but such defacement upon a carefully curated painting at the state’s expense was certainly not the right forum.”

It is to be mentioned that artist Nilim Mahanta from Assam was arrested from North Lakhimpur while advocate Ebo Mili was arrested from his office chamber in Itanagar.
