Rabies outbreak in Itanagar: Urgent warning issued after tragic puppy bite incident

The District Medical Officer (DMO) of Itanagar Capital Region has issued an alarm regarding a rabies outbreak in the vicinity of Jullang near Don Bosco College and Chimpu in Itanagar.

According to DMO Dr. Mandip Perme, an 18-year-old named Nyaro Rusing displayed classic signs and symptoms of rabies when he was brought to TRIHMS on September 14. This information was conveyed in a letter addressed to the State Surveillance Officer (SSO) of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP).

Notably, the patient, a first-year student at Don Bosco College, had never previously been in contact with any animals until July 2023 when he suffered a bite on his right hand palm from a two-month-old puppy.

Dr. Perme went on to reveal that neither the patient nor the puppy received an Anti-Rabies Vaccination, tragically resulting in the puppy’s demise following the bite.
