The North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) was criticized by the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA) for not being able to resolve several problems of the North Lakhimpur urban area.
By beginning with a two hour long sit-in in front of the Adarsha Bazaar of North Lakhimpur town, the organization staged their protest against the civic body. The protest was led by AAUA Lakhimpur district president Binod Das and general secretary Khirod Chetia.
The NLMB was demanded to cover the drains of the town with lids immediately, shopping malls without parking facilities needs to be closed, to make the jobs of the NLMB employees regular who have been working temporarily for 15-20 years according to the resolution decided in the monthly review meeting and without managing prior rehabilitation the eviction of street vendors needs to be stopped with immediate effect.
A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur district and the organizations demanded him to take steps to resolve the problems soon. Failing to meet their demands would result in increased agitation against NLMB in the coming days. The protest programme was supported by the Lakhimpur district unit of Scheduled Caste Students’ Union.
