Assam: Dimasa tribe’s Judima rice wine becomes Northeast’s first beverage to get GI tag

The Judima rice wine, a well-known traditional wine of Assam’s Dimasa tribe, has been given the Geographical Indication (GI) label, making it the first beverage from the Northeast to receive this designation. Rice and herbs are used to make the wine.

In 2018, the Dima Hasao district’s Youth Association for Development and Empowerment (YADEM) approached the Assam Agriculture University (AAU) for assistance in obtaining the GI tag for Judima.

The organisation presented their proposal to AAU’s Intellectual Property Rights Act (IPRA) unit, requesting funding for the programme through a suitable conduit to the GI office in Chennai.

According to a media source, the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) relied on historical backgrounds while documenting the drink before claiming a GI designation.

The institution collaborated closely with the Youth Association for Development and Empowerment (YADE) (YADEM).

According to the report, AAU director of research (agricultural) Dr Ashok Bhattacharyya stated that the Chennai-based GI Registry provided information about Judima receiving the honour on its website.
