Assam Police detained six

In a major operation against illegal rhino horn smuggling, the Assam Police detained six people from the Biswanath district of Assam.

According to ANI, a team from Biswanath Police Station launched an operation based on specific information and apprehended the six people for allegedly attempting to sell a piece of rhino horn.

Aslam Sheikh, Hamid Sheikh, and Ghanashyam Gupta, the three apprehended individuals, are all residents of Ambari village in Biswanath Chariali. Zamir Dhali, a resident of Chariali’s Bangaon village; Mantu Chamuwa, a resident of Nagaon’s Lehugaon village; and Kiran Das, a resident of Gohpur’s Borachuk village, are the other three accused. In addition, an investigation is being conducted into the matter.

Currently, international trade in rhino horn is banned under CITES, in response to growing concerns that increasing demand from Asian nations over the last decade has led to a poaching crisis that has decimated many African rhino populations. The reimplementation of South Africa’s domestic rhino horn market in 2017 has reignited the debate as how best to mitigate a crisis that could see rhinos extinct in the wild within a few decades. Below are our thoughts and views on the complex issues behind one of the most lucrative wildlife products in illegal trade.

Rhino horn is very desirable amongst the wealthy classes of Vietnam, where it is considered a symbol of power and wealth, associated with business success and high social standing. In the key consumer and trafficking countries for rhino horn – Vietnam and China, high demand and low enforcement of wildlife crime are driving the illegal trade and poaching of rhinos. To address this problem, we fund cutting-edge social marketing initiatives to stop consumers from wanting to buy horn in the first place.

To stop rhino poaching, we need to tackle its root cause: consumer demand for rhino horn. Without consumer demand, there will be no incentive for poachers or traffickers.
