During an encounter, Assam police was able to gun down top ULFA(I) leader Dwipen Saud at Besimari in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Thursday.
Saud was appointed as the Commander of the outfit’s Western Command, replacing former ULFA-I Deputy Commander-in-Chief Drishti Rajkhowa.
After the encounter, Saud was taken to the civil hospital in Bongaigaon where he was declared “brought dead” by the doctors, confirmed Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.
“We apprehended his gunman Padum Rai along with a weapon. We recovered another weapon and one grenade, and our search operation is on,” Mahanta said.
Police-Ulfa encounter at Besimari (Manikpur PS) in Bongaigaon District took place just some time back.

His gun man Padum Rai is apprehended alive with a weapon. Another weapon and a grenade recovered in the PO. Further search is on.
