A 52-year-old woman was beaten to death on suspicion of witchcraft at Simaluguri village in Assam’s Udalguri district’s Dimakuchi police station. According to reports, a mob led by Amit Gour thrashed the victim woman, Phulmati Gour, wife of Gandur Gour, on Friday.

The woman was seriously injured in the attack and died as a result of her injuries. On Sunday morning, Dimakuchi Police sent the woman’s body to Udalguri Civil Hospital for a post-mortem.

“It was a case of witch-hunting according to a preliminary investigation. We have arrested five persons in connection with the incident. A local court has sent them to 14-day judicial custody on Saturday,” Bhergaon SDPO, Jyoti Prasad Pegu told Northeast Now.

He went on to say that police are also looking into whether there are any other angles to the case. The accused have been identified as Amit Gour, Maniram Gour, Jiten Gour, Anjali Gour, and Kamala Gour.

According to Assam government data, 107 people were killed in witch-hunting incidents in Assam between 2011 and 2019.

Since 2018, the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention, and Protection) Act has been in effect in the state, imposing harsh punishment and fines for branding and killing people after branding them as “witches.”

On January 6, another case of witchcraft came into light where at least eight people from six families were injured after a group of villagers attacked them and vandalized their houses over suspicion of them practicing witchcraft in the locality in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district. The incident took place at Satgaon Langfaki Garo village under Baithalangso police station in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district.

Police have arrested the mastermind and picked up 50 other people in connection with the incident. The victims’ families claimed that a group of villagers attacked them using sharp weapons and also vandalized their houses after a priest of a local church accused them of being witches.
