The National People’s Party (NPP) claimed on Tuesday that several banned insurgent groups are openly campaigning in Manipur for the ruling BJP.

The Manipur government’s alliance partner, the NPP, has demanded adequate security coverage for its candidates in the state’s upcoming Assembly election.

For a free and fair election, the party has also urged authorities to return all militants in that state to their camps and seize all weapons from them.

On the matter, a formal complaint was filed with the state’s election office and the Election Commission.

Following reports of armed militants campaigning openly for the BJP and Naga Peoples Front in Manipur for the February 27 and March 3 election, the NPP made the demand.

“The outfits namely KNF-MC, KNF-Z, UKLF, KNA and the HPC (D) have openly come out in blatant support of our opponent’s candidates from BJP and NPF,” the NPP said in a statement.

“We urge the authorities to put all underground groups under Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement in their respective camps and recover arms from their possession… and to provide security cover to our candidates in these most sensitive constituencies,” the statement added.

According to the NPP, which is running in 42 of Manipur’s 60 constituencies, HPC (D) cadres are arming themselves and intimidating voters and village chiefs into voting for BJP candidates.

“Underground groups like KNA and UKLF who are under SoO agreement are threatening our party workers and village chief to support BJP candidate Letpao Haokip in Tengnaupal constituency,” the statement said.
