DCW Chief advocates President’s Rule in Manipur

In a recent report submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal expressed concerns over the escalating violence in Manipur. According to her findings, people from various communities in the Northeast state have “lost trust” in the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Biren Singh.

During her visit to the strife-torn state, Maliwal interacted with members of the Kuki and Meitei communities, who have been embroiled in ethnic clashes resulting in the loss of nearly 150 lives over the past three months. In response to the situation, the DCW chief strongly advocated for the immediate imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur.

Additionally, Maliwal called for a thorough investigation into the root causes of the ongoing conflict. She proposed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a sitting Supreme Court judge to conduct a comprehensive probe.

As a part of her recommendations, the DCW chief urged the government to swiftly provide a compensation package of Rs 25 lakhs to the survivors and families affected by the violence.

Maliwal also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in addressing sexual assault allegations in the state. She urged the Manipur government to provide copies of all First Information Reports (FIRs) pertaining to sexual assault cases from the past months to the Delhi Commission for Women, allowing them to oversee the rehabilitation process.

The situation in Manipur remains critical, and the government’s response will play a crucial role in restoring peace and harmony in the region. With growing concerns over the administration’s effectiveness, the call for President’s Rule and a comprehensive investigation marks a crucial turning point in addressing the escalating crisis in the state
