Aiming to ease financial crisis of the deceased footballer Manitombi Singh, the Sports Ministry sanctioned Rs. 5 lakhs for the family, on Friday.
39 years old Defender Manitombi, died in August after fighting illness from a long time. He was the only earning member of his family who looked after his parents, wife and his eight-year-old son.
Manitombi played for India in the 2002 LG Cup held in Vietnam under Mohun Bagan. He also was a part of the National team in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
“Manitombi has contributed significantly to Indian football. He also contributed as a coach in Manipur. His demise is indeed a loss for the sporting community” said sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The minister also added,“When we learnt about the financial crisis that the family is facing after his death, extending support to them was a duty upon us.”.
Rs. 5 lakh was granted under the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for sportspersons.
