Manipur Students’ Union to call for 48-hr bandh

A 48-hour inter-state bandh will be called by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) from October 26, if the government cannot issue a notification to conduct the impending Autonomous District Council (ADC) election within four days.
The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has submitted an ultimatum to the state government on Wednesday.
The band will include all under constructed national projects in the state, it stated.
The Hills Areas Committee (HAC) had “illegally’ asked for the deferment of ADC election in March and the state government have, at the behest of the HAC, postponed it citing “rainy season”, President of ATSUM Seiboi Haokip said.
He further said although elections can be postponed because of administrative difficulty, “rainy season” is not an apt reason for the postponement.
He also reiterated his condemnation against the demand of the four ADC chairpersons who have recently asked for further postponement of the ADC elections till June next year, citing “Harvesting season and COVID-19” as reasons.
As the by-polls are being conducted amid COVID-19, an ADC election which has completed its full term should also be allowed to be conducted, he added.
