Manipur University releases reservation norms

For admission into the 1st semester of the scholastic year 2020-2021 for all Master’s degree courses and post-graduate diploma courses, reservation norms to be followed by the Manipur University.
It will be 40 per cent for UR (unreserved), 10 per cent for EWS (Economically Weaker Section), 31 per cent for ST (Scheduled Tribes), 2 per cent for SC (Scheduled Caste) and 17 per cent for OBC (Other Backward Classes), said a circular issued by the Registrar of the University, Prof. W. Chandbabu Singh.
Manipur University, although it is a Central University, doesn’t follow the reservation policy applicable to a university run by the central government since 2016 after a huge protest by the tribal students in the state broke out.
While the central reservation norm has put the cap for Scheduled Tribes (ST) at 7.5 per cent, it is 31 per cent at Manipur University. This was given after mass protests by the tribal students in Manipur that led to the shutdown of the institute for days in 2016.
The Manipur University, which started as a state university, had 31 per cent reservation when it was run by the state government in 1980. It became a central university in 2005 and since then followed central reservation policy until 2016.
