Manipur: NPP candidate’s father shot during election campaign

NPP candidate’s father shot during election campaign

Shamjai Singh, father of National People’s Party (NPP) Manipur candidate L Sanjoy, was shot at and injured by suspected militants a day after BJP national president JP Nadda stated that pre-poll violence has no place in Manipur.

However, Singh was campaigning for his son, who had previously worked for the BJP, on Friday night when the incident occurred.

Last month, he switched to the NPP. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries to his right shoulder.

The attack comes as the opposition accuses the BJP of engaging in pre-election violence ahead of Manipur’s assembly elections, which will be held in two phases on February 28 and March 5.

Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya and the national president of the National People’s Party (NPP), has called the attack on the father of a party’s candidate in the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections as “politically motivated.”

The election commission has responded ‘positively’ to the NPP’s security concerns about its candidates in Manipur, according to Conrad Sangma.

In addition, Sangma said that miscreants have attacked a number of NPP candidates and their relatives ahead of Manipur’s Assembly elections and advised Manipur’s chief electoral officer about the attack on our candidate’s father and a series of incidents that occurred throughout the state, raising serious concerns about the safety of our candidates and the general public.

Unidentified miscreants allegedly shot and injured the father of an NPP candidate from Andro constituency in Manipur, L Sanjoy Singh, on February 18.

However, when Shamjai Singh, L Sanjoy Singh’s father, was on a campaign trail with his son in Yairipok Yambem Leikai in Manipur’s Imphal East district, the incident occurred.

Soon after the NPP petitioned the election commission for adequate security cover for its candidates in Manipur, Shamjai Singh was attacked by miscreants.

Meanwhile, Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has expressed his sorrow over the attack on Shamjai Singh.

“Anguished that our candidate, Sh. L. Sanjoy Singh’s father, Sh. Shamjai Singh was shot & injured in a campaign programme at Yairipok Yambem Leikai. These incidents are tarnishing the sacred essence of our democracy. I urge ECI to see into these developments in #Manipur,” NPP president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted.
