Meghalaya govt appoints former DC to lead peace talk with HNLC

Peter S Dkhar, a former deputy commissioner (DC)of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, has been appointed by the Centre to lead the peace talks with the HNLC.

The development was confirmed by Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui.

Moreover, the Meghalaya government sent Peter Dkhar’s name to the Centre for consideration as an interlocutor in the HNLC peace talks.

Meanwhile, advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), retired IPS officer AK Mishra, will coordinate the peace talks with the HNLC from the Centre.

Conrad K. Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, recently met with Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla in New Delhi to discuss the HNLC’s peace proposal.

However, Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, had previously stated that the state government would try to reach an amicable conclusion to the proposed peace process with the HNLC.

In addition, CM Conrad Sangma had stated, “I am hopeful that we can begin a peace process with the HNLC to attain total peace in Meghalaya.”

The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) announced on February 8 that it is ready for peace talks and that there are no preconditions.

“As of now we are ready to talk within the ambit of the Indian constitution and we are ready to have talks without any pre-conditions,” the HNLC’s leader said.
