Meghalaya : IIT-Guwahati experts to probe Uranium tanks

An expert team from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati was engaged by the Meghalaya government on Tuesday to do investigations into the radiation areas in rivulet Phud Syngkai.

After the news of cracks and leaks from the uranium effluent tanks at Nongbah Jynrin was reported, a report was given by the NEHU expert committee after four months which gave rise to concerns about potential exposure to radiation downstream.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday said that an expert team from IIT-Guwahati will look into the radiation prone areas.

The radiation levels were found to be safe in uranium tanks at Nongbah Jynrin, however the radiation levels were found to be much higher than the safe limits about 100 feet away from the source of Phud Syngkai, a rivulet, reported NEHU.

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) claims that the NEHU report is doubtful and that they want an independent inquiry into the issue.
