Tilak Rai, a well-known senior journalist, and writer of Meghalaya died on Tuesday in NEIGRIHMs Shillong.

He was one of the architects of modern journalism and passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 56.

Moreover, he was the first to start an online news portal Oh! Meghalaya in 2008 and was the editor in it. Rai was a regular contributor to several newspapers and wrote on a variety of topics.

However, Tilak Rai began his career as a journalist in 1990-91 with Bindo M Lanong’s U Lum Shyllong, a popular Khasi weekly. He even had a brief spell with The Shillong Times when the rush of print journalism arrived, following which he maintained his writing with Meghalaya Guardian.

Later he joined the Indian Express in 1997, where he not only interviewed but also interacted with a number of dignitaries and celebrities.

The loss of Rai, who was recognized for his firm dedication to journalistic ethics and as a valued guide to many aspirants in the field, has been met with profound sorrow by several media organizations and the Shillong Press Club.

Meanwhile, Cabinet minister James Sangma expressed his condolences for the prominent journalist’s early demise, saying that his passion for his profession will continue to inspire people.
