Meghalaya : KHADC opposes construction of ASTC transit camp

The construction of an Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) transit camp has been objected by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya.

The intended transit camp of the ASTC at Khanapara falls “well inside Meghalaya territory”, said the KHADC.

The construction need to be stopped by the Assam Government, said HADC CEM Titostarwell Chyne, claiming the construction as illegal.

The KHADC has also written to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup-Metro district in Assam on the matter.

“We have written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district asking him to intervene and stop the construction work as the land belongs to Meghalaya,” KHADC CEM Titostarwell Chyne said.

Chyne also informed that the KHADC had written to the Meghalaya Chief Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner Ri-Bhoi district and asked them to take important steps regarding the matter.

“Land owners of the plot, where the transit camp is being constructed, have approached the KHADC seeking redressal,” he informed.

A decades old boundary dispute has been prevailing between Meghalaya and Assam . Both the sides claim 12 areas of dispute as its own.

This issue of boundary dispute might possibly be discussed during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Assam on January 23rd.
