This decision was taken during the meeting of both the Chief Minister of the state, Assam and Meghalaya on border disputes on Friday in Guwahati. 

Regional Committees have been formed to look into disputes in areas of differences which will submit their reports within thirty days. 

“We have decided to form 3 Regional Committees headed by one Cabinet Minister each from both Meghalaya & Assam to look into matters of the 6 areas of differences. The RCs will make joint visits and submit their report within 30 days,” said Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma. 

Conrad further said: “We stand united & committed to resolve our border issues with mutual respect, keeping our people first and by upholding the spirit of North East alive. Thank Hon’ble CM of Assam, Sh. @himantabiswa Ji.” 

“There is very strong will from both Meghalaya & Assam Governments to find an amicable solution to the areas of differences. Today we discussed 6 areas of differences which will be taken up in a phase-wise manner,” tweeted Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma. 

“We are very happy that the meeting was very constructive and positive”, Sangma said, while adding, “We have been very clear from both the Governments that we want to resolve the area of differences and the disputes that are there between the two States. It has been very long and a lot of people have suffered in different areas because of these differences that have existed”.

The areas which are slightly less complicated will be taken up for resolving first. The six areas out of 12, which will be taken up are – Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara – Philangkata and Ratachera.

“These six areas are what we have decided that we will move towards finding an amicable solution. We have also decided that there will be regional committees that will be formed by both the states, which will be headed by a cabinet minister,” he added.

While Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that once the six areas of difference are resolved, both the States will move forward to resolve other areas of differences.

In the next 30 days, the Chief Ministers of both the States will also visit Langpih jointly to send a message that both the States are keen to resolve all areas of differences between the two states.

“We assure the people that both the States are committed to resolve the complicated issues as well. However, we will start from less complicated issues and will move towards more complicated issues,” Sarma said.
