The opposition leader Lalduhoma was disqualified as a member of the State Legislative Assembly by Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo on Friday.
Lalduhoma, who contested the last Mizoram Assembly polls as an independent candidate, has been qualified by the Assembly Speaker under the anti-defection law.
For “defecting” to the newly-floated Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the Assembly Speaker had to take the decision on the Serchhip Assembly seat holder.
Over violation of the Constitution of the country, petitions seeking disqualification of Lalduhoma were submitted by 12 ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) legislators, in September.
Lalduhoma breached para 2 (2) of the 10th schedule of the Indian constitution by defecting to the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party.
Lalduhoma was alleged of attending ZPM party activities and inducting new members into the party at functions held in Aizawl and other places, which, according to the petitioners, proved that he defected to the ZPM.
A show-cause notice has been served to the 71-year-old Lalduhoma on September 24 by the State Assembly seeking an why he should not be disqualified.
Replying on October 8th, Lalduhoma asserted that he did not defect to any other party as he held his commitment to the ZPM since its formation in 2017.
ZPM was shaped by many minor parties, which included Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), a registered state party which Lalduhoma headed earlier.
In the 2018 Assembly polls, along with 37 other candidates, he was declared an official candidate of ZPM, added Lalduhoma.
