Mizoram : Congress demands action against rural development minister

State Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai was requested by the youth wing of Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee to take punishing steps against rural development minister Lalruatkima for “misleading the people by disseminating wrong information about the Mizo accord on the social media platforms.”

The governor was submitted a petition by the Congress that said Lalruatkima, the state information and public relations minister, had allegedly dropped a photocopy of the memorandum of settlement between the Mizo National Front (MNF) and India (1986) as written in Wikipedia in the comments section of a Facebook post made by one who goes by the name Puia Vanchia in “Save Mizoram” Facebook group, on November 6, 2020.

In that MoS photocopy posted by Lalruatkima the words “The territory of Mizoram should be specified according to the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971” were edited to “The territory of Mizoram should be specified according to the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1875,” the Congress said.

The Memorandum of Settlement of 1986 between MNF and the Union Government provides for the formation of Mizoram state as “The territory of Mizoram should be specified according to the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971”.

The State of Mizoram Act, 1986, provides for the boundary of Mizoram on the basis of the Memorandum of Settlement on 1986, it said.

Congress claimed that as the accord was made under the Constitution of India, which leads to the amendment of the Indian Constitution and clearly stated in Schedule 1 Para 23 of the Constitution as “The territory specified in section 6 of the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971”.
