Pochury tribe demands upgradation of Meluri to district; rally planned for February

Following the recent creation of Shamator as a district, which had been a long-standing demand, it appears that there are calls for the creation of more districts in Nagaland. The latest demand comes from Pochury tribal leaders, who have resolved to press for the upgrade of Meluri sub-division, which is part of Phek district, to a full-fledged district.

On December 18, 2021, the state cabinet approved the creation of three new districts: Tseminyu, Chümoukedima, and Niuland, as well as Shamator in January of this year.

On January 20, a meeting on Meluri subdivision upgradation was held at the residence of NPF legislator Yitachu, according to sources. Representatives from Pochury Hoho, Pochury Kajipa Organization, Pochury GB Union, Pochury Mothers’ Association, Pochury Youth Front, Pochury Students’ Union, and Pochury Literature Board are said to have attended the meeting.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the decision to pursue the upgradation of Meluri sub-division into a full-fledged district was discussed extensively. According to sources, the house decided to hold a “peace rally” in Meluri town in the first week of February to demand immediate upgradation of the Meluri sub-division. The meeting also decided to send a memorandum in support of Meluri district to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Despite the fact that chief minister Neiphiu Rio stated during a cabinet meeting on December 18 last year that his government would not divide areas inhabited by one tribe, calls for the upgradation of sub-divisions to full districts have grown louder, bolstered by the creation of four new districts.

Aside from Meluri, there are calls for the Mon district’s Tobu sub-division, Wokha district’s Bhandari sub-division, and Mokokchung district’s Mangkolemba sub-division to be upgraded to full districts.

It should be noted that the Aboi District Demand Committee has given the state government until January 23, 2022 to declare Aboi as a district. While urging the relevant authority to take the matter seriously, ADDC warned the government that if it did not respond positively to its ultimatum, the committee would pursue its own course of action.

It was recalled that the demand for the upgrade of Aboi ADC HQ to district HQ began in 2008 and was later included in the cabinet memo of 2011.
