SC approves resignation of Nagaland Lokayukta Justice

The resignation of Nagaland Lokayukta Justice (retd) Uma Nath Singh was accepted by the Supreme Court, after he proposed to step down as per suggestion by the apex court on conditions that the state government or others refrain from starting any action or defamation in media based on the pending plea.

Justice (retd) Singh must be given protection during his visit in Nagaland for collecting his belongings, said a bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian.

Based on certain conditions he was allowed resignation by the apex court from his post as the head of the ombudsman.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh, filed a note in the top court regarding willingness of Justice (retd) Singh to resign.

Due to disagreeable circumstances hostile environment Justice (retd) Singh has submitted his resignation.

This court may treat this as his resignation and may pass orders accordingly, it had said.

The Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court and the Chief Secretary of Nagaland and Commissioner/ Secretary to the Governor should take custody of the articles handed over by Lokayukta to his office.

The state government requested the apex court to pass suitable lead in exercise of its power under Article 142 of the Constitution to make sure that the institutional principles of the post of Nagaland Lokayukta and the spirit of the Nagaland Lokayukta Act, 2017 are preserved.
