State BJP spokesperson Dr. Raju Giri said that, though in alliance with the ruling SKM, would not interfere in the selection process for the posts of Mayor and deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC).
Dr. Giri stated that,’We don’t want to impose our thoughts that this person or that person should be the Mayor or deputy Mayor. The posts should be as per capability of the particular person, BJP will not interfere. GMC is an autonomous urban local body with its own rules and functioning under a competent authority’.
A candidate from Upper M.G. Marg had been touted as the unofficial GMC Mayor candidate. However the candidate lost the election when results were announced on April 3.
No party fielded their candidates as the civic polls were held in a non-political party based system.
Even after 10 days of the result announcement, it is not clear who would be the Mayor and deputy Mayor of Gangtok as all the 19 winning councillors contested as independent candidates.
The State BJP spokesperson also termed GJM leader Bimal Gurung’s allegations against the Sikkim government and BJP as ‘unfortunate’. Gurung had on April 10 accused Chief Minister P.S. Golay acting on behest of BJP to fund the campaign of BJP candidates in North Bengal. He had also alleged that BJP is about to finish the SKM government.
