Shamator officially designated as Nagaland’s 16th district

On Friday, Shamator was designated as Nagaland’s 16th district. The new district, which was carved out of Tuensang, was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said on Friday that the spirit of reconciliation and harmony that paved the way for the creation of Shamator should guide the communities and the district on its new path as Nagaland’s 16th district.

Rio stressed the importance of maintaining peace and unity among Shamator’s three communities— Yimkhiungs, Tikhirs, and Sumis—during the official inauguration ceremony of the ‘brotherhood district’ at Shamator headquarters.

Rio recalled that the initial demands for the creation of the Shamator district, while justified, were made at a time when the communities were divided and at odds.

In addition, the situation was “complicated,” he said; the state Cabinet agreed in principle to upgrade the subdivision to a district during its meeting, on the condition that the area’s tribal bodies resolve internal conflicts.

He urged the audience to put past disagreements aside and reconcile and coexist peacefully.

Moreover, he also expressed gratitude to the tribal leaders who were able to reach an agreement and reconcile among themselves, allowing for the recognition of the Tikhir tribe as well as Shamator’s district status.

Meanwhile, Rio mentioned the PMGSY road projects in the district, as well as the two-laning of NH-202, as examples of how better road connectivity should be prioritized in the future.

Furthermore, he said that the central government had received a proposal for a Trans-National Highway connecting Showuba, Dimapur, Pangsha, Noklak, and Shamator via Chessore and Shamator. He also stated that a cooperative bank would be established in Chessore.

Rio encouraged residents to create a tourist map because the district has tourism potential.

The chief minister urged the crowd to maintain a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere in order for society to progress.

He also urged them to abandon land disputes in favour of donating land to the government for development.

On the same day, Rio laid the foundation stone for the DC complex and the Village Guards Training Centre in Shamator.

Moreover, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, host of the inaugural programme and adviser to information and public relations, urged people to live in peace with one another for mutual benefit. He went on to say that society will progress once there is peace.

Tuensang deputy commissioner Kumar Ramnikant pledged the people of Tuensang’s support and cooperation to Shamator district, saying Tuensang would be like a parent to Shamator.

Thsüvisie Phoji, Shamator deputy commissioner, gave a brief overview of the Shamator district. According to the 2011 census, the new district has a population of 34,223 people and a literacy rate of 68.79 per cent.

However, the occasion was marked by performances by various cultural troupes as well as special numbers.
