Sikkim: Mehraj Pradhan’s innovation named best from State in Youth Ideathon

Mehraj Pradhan's idea of innovation

Mehraj Pradhan of Sikkim’s idea for a “Army Safety Gate” was chosen as the top innovative idea from the state of Sikkim, earning him the title of State Winner of India@75. Youth Ideathon 2021 is an online event organised by CBSE in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s Management and Entrepreneurship and Professional Skill Council (MEPSC) for students in grades 6 to 12.

According to a press release, the ideathon was created to help students learn about innovation and entrepreneurship.

According to the press release, Mehraj’s innovative idea of a “Army Safety Gate” is based on sensor technology that can prevent car suicide bombing attacks in the Army cantonment area. Such incidents occur frequently in many parts of India, which prompted him to develop such technology.

His idea was chosen from among the 62,000 children who participated in the ideathon across the country, and the top 125 innovative ideas were chosen for the final round of the three-stage event.

On November 20, the certificate and the token prize money were presented to him at an award ceremony held at IIT Delhi.

He won first place in the Online Scientific and Innovative Idea Competition, held on January 28 as part of North Bengal Science Centre’s INNOVO-FEST 2021, for the same innovative idea.

Mehraj is a class 10 student at St. Augustine’s School in Kalimpong, and is the eldest son of Ashok Pradhan and Sharmila Kumari Pradhan of Tarpin, Rhenock. His passion is for mechatronics.

According to the press release, he has set up a small lab in his home where he has developed several sensor-based devices, including obstacle-avoiding cars, smart sticks for visually impaired people, smart dustbins, smart hand-sanitizing machines, land mine detectors, and street light generators from the road speed breaker during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.
